Repairing a nose to use the firehawk hood on a 1998 T/A?

Post by xirxious » Wed Aug 31, 2011 11:41 pm

I decided to take my car in for the insurance to fix the bumble up someone did in a parking lot. I wanted to upgrade to a ws6 hood, the one I got was ruined by the shipper. Now I've found a firehawk hood, but the body shop is concerned about how the nose needs to be trimmed around the RA ducts. I've read it's just an inch or so. Does anyone have the repair specs or what it takes to fit one on? I plan on calling SLP in the morning. The shop's concern was removing the center nose support to fit the hood. I've done more extreme things on my own to cars, but they're worried about getting it correct and possibly me returning it for defects. A pic looking forward from the engine bay of someones nose with the hood up would help. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's easy work.
Many people have done it.
Install the hood, close it down to match the front bumper, Scribe a line, Lift the hood back up, & start cuttin', ...

I used to have a photo of the stock bumper with a couple lines scribbled on it, but haven't found it yet.
If I find it, I'll post it later.

But here's a comparison photo for ya, ...
Basically the nostril area gets cut.

Thanks, I've been searching through the pictures here. The guy at the shop thought the cut removed the center facia tie down. I know it can't be too hard, but I'm having trouble convincing him this isn't a custom show car they're fixing. I spoke with SLP and they no longer had any repair/support info, but the guy said its as easy as you described it. A picture looking forward of the airbox would be great, but all the ones in the directory are the backwards looking engine shots.

Here are two other old photos I had in my Webshots folder.

This is the SLP HO hood, with the stock GM front bumper.
The rough sketch line represents the area cut for the Firehawk hood.

Not a very good photo, ...

The hood is popped open on this photo, ...

I'll have to take a couple more to show any detail in the center area.

I think you have to glue down the nose, as the support gets cut off
