2001 factory hawk exhaust
Have noticed that my factory hawk exhaust is much quieter than ive heard on other hawks and even camaro SS'. had somone tell me that some of the cars have a silencer screen cone inside the pipe where it connects to the muffler. anyone have any info on this? if this is true i think ill be removing the muffler and tail pipes soon to remove it if it is there. any and all help is greatly appreciated.

i know the Borla exhaust system has an option to block the exhaust or limit the flow going out of the passenger side pipe. i'm guessing you have the same thing maybe?

Re: 2001 factory hawk exhaust
you got me, all i can think of is that the one side is blocked off. hopefully you can find out what it is, a loud hawk is so much more fun the one that isn't so loud

Re: 2001 factory hawk exhaust
Not sure if there's any truth to it, but there was a thread on LS1Tech a few years ago that showed that 'blockage'.
Had some good photos in there of the plate that had limited the driver's side exhaust exit.
Have ya tried to search out that thread over there yet?
Edit: I searched for it, but couldn't find it yet.
But there was a thread about it a couple years ago.
There was a round disc, welded into the left outlet of the muffler, that had a small hole in it at about 1/2" or so.

Re: 2001 factory hawk exhaust
appreciate you taking the time to look for me. i remember hearing about it, but dont recall seeing it with my own eyes. think i may just break down and pull it off to look for myself. worst case i just end up polishing it before putting it back on....

Re: 2001 factory hawk exhaust
I don't believe the Dual Dual had a silencer in them. They were all pretty quite from the factory.
What I believe you are talking about is what is refered to as the "Cone of Silence" that was common on the TOTL exhaust.
If you want to make your exhaust louder, deleting the cats will do a little, but not much. Best bet is to find an aftermarket
exhaust that is to your liking.
Hope this helps.

Re: 2001 factory hawk exhaust
I have never heard nor seen this on the dual dual. I have owned at least 6 of these exhausts over the years... sad but true.
Doing the front end of the exhaust really changes the sound. A nice set of long tubes, cat-less y-pipe changes the sound thru the back. Not sure if it that is what you are looking for... just thought I would throw it out as an option.

You are correct. I saw the picture on tech. I also remember reading in a thread where someone said it was certain states or a state that got them. I remember the thread because Firehawk526 had responded in the thread I saw. I looked again with no luck. It was a good picture of it. I thought the discussion came up on here also? I had no luck searching here.PontiacFan wrote:Not sure if there's any truth to it, but there was a thread on LS1Tech a few years ago that showed that 'blockage'.

This may be a little late in responding since I haven't been on here in a while. But anyway it was me that removed the "Ring of Silence" from my car. Search that phrase and you'll find the thread.

Cone of silence may work better.steveb wrote:This may be a little late in responding since I haven't been on here in a while. But anyway it was me that removed the "Ring of Silence" from my car. Search that phrase and you'll find the thread.
